What is Quantum Technology?

Despite the growing dominance of AI, quantum technology has continued to gain momentum and garner the interest of investors. Quantum technology is based on the principles of quantum mechanics and the concept of superposition. The classic example of Schrödinger’s cat illustrates this concept, where a cat is both simultaneously dead and alive in a box until the box is opened and the cat is observed. In classical computing, the computational unit is the bit, which can be in a state of either 0 or 1 to process information. These bits are then combined into sequences that enable various programs and processes to be executed. In quantum computing, a qubit is used, which can be in the state of either 0, 1, or both. Compared to a classical bit, this offers a third option, which allows for numerous different combinations and sequences. This significantly increases processing power and enables greater computational capabilities.


Quantum technology can currently be broken down into three categories. Quantum computing (QC) can help with financial modeling, problem solving, and drug discovery. Next is quantum communication (QComm), which is helpful for transferring quantum information over long distances and introducing new and improved ways of encryption. Finally, quantum sensing (QS) can measure and record things like electromagnetic fields and gravity with much greater sensitivity and accuracy.


Despite the complex nature of this technology, it is a step toward the future that will have an impact on everyday lives. Although not visible on the surface, quantum technology will work behind the scenes to make many of the devices and systems we use each day more powerful and efficient. It can be integrated into nearly every major area of modern technology through strengthening cybersecurity, improving navigation systems, enhancing healthcare diagnostics, and enabling faster and more reliable digital services.

 

Investment Landscape of the Market

Currently, many top global investment firms have been funding this sector, with the market estimated to reach a value of $97 billion by 2035. Looking back, global investment in this market rose rapidly from $1.3 billion in 2023 to about $2 billion in 2024, and this upward trend is expected to continue. In the U.S., the forefront of quantum venture activity, $2.8 billion has been invested into U.S.-based startups through the 3rd quarter of 2025. Due to this, investors have an opportunity to help fund this market and receive a high return in the long run. This technology is also implemented in many other markets, like AI and robotics, which allows for several different applications and growth opportunities.

Quantum computing (QC) currently holds the bulk of the investment in this market, with about 80%. The largest companies in QC focus on the production and distribution of superconductors and photon networks. The QC market alone is expected to reach up to $72 billion in 2035.


Furthermore, some notable acquisitions have occurred this year between big QC companies and quantum communication (QComm) companies. For example, IonQ has recently acquired Oxford Ionics, which was the biggest deal this year, exceeding a billion dollars. IonQ has also acquired Lightsynq, Capella Space, ID Quantique, and Vector Atomic.

 

The Future for Quantum Technology

As quantum technology continues to mature, its impact is expected to reach far beyond specialized research and into mainstream industries. The next decade will likely see breakthroughs in hardware stability, error correction, and scalability, which are key barriers that currently limit quantum systems from reaching their full potential. As these challenges are overcome, the technology will become more commercially viable and accessible to both large enterprises and startups.


Its influence will extend beyond specialized industries and begin shaping everyday consumer experiences. As previously stated, much of this will occur behind the scenes. For example, quantum-secure communication will strengthen the privacy of personal devices, quantum sensing will improve navigation and medical imaging, and quantum-enhanced algorithms will make digital services and programs faster and more accurate. Consumers may not interact directly with quantum technology, but they will feel the effects as it becomes a catalyst for pushing our current everyday systems and technology into a new age of efficiency and power.


For investors, investing in this technology will prove to yield long-term returns as the market continues to grow. The coming years will mark a pivotal period to identify high-impact ventures that can continue to develop real-world applications.
